The earring

30” x 40”

Acrylic

2003

This work is a study in form and in chiaroscuro while highlighting natural female beauty.  Unlike the normal subjects of chiaroscuro artists like Rembrandt and Caravaggio, I’m portraying a woman with brown skin and curly hair who exudes a certain pride as she completes her daily rituals.

Commissioned by a friend of mine who wanted something that embodied harmony and softness, I chose a 1920’s jazz café with its dim lighting and misty atmosphere in an attempt to portray the sultry flavor of the era.

Singing the Blues
