Fear

24” x 30”

Acrylic

2000

An attempt at expressionist painting, I want to convey the concept of fear.  Unlike the majority of my work, I did not pencil in the form before painting, and the work took all of 30 minutes to create.  My main focus is on color contrast.

This work comes from my memories of Senegal and the female vendors that would sell fruit and other goods at the markets and on the beaches.  The word “jaaykat” is Wolof for “vendor.”  I specifically used the colors green, red, and yellow because they best represent Africa for me.
