Fire Dancer

60” x 84”

Acrylic

2004

This is the biggest of my pieces to date and probably one of the most fun to work on.  Its immensity gave me more freedom to let lose and to explore with the effects of color and of drippage.   The form is pretty simple although it provides a nice structure for the exploding color to originate from.  I definitely want to continue to work in such a large format.

Very seldom do I work with straight geometric forms.  I often employ them in my figure drawings but never as patterns.  In this work I use geometric pattern on top of color, a marriage I plan to use more often.  I also explore the use of layers, painting over the fire colors with black and then etching the form on top.  Here I follow the ancient Egyptian style of creating profiles, a complement to the geometric pattern.
