Gratitude

33’’ x 70’’

Batik

2003

Simplified forms and geometrical designs, this tri-panel batik shows the states leading up to gratitude.  We see the figure of a man who is distraught, but through reflection he finds an answer and then rejoices for his new-found enlightenment.  I tried to accentuate the limited palette of batik, emphasizing how a monochrome work can evoke the same aesthetic qualities of a work that uses the whole spectrum.

While I normally work with form, this batik is meant to be purely decorative.  I used a wooden stamp for the border and paintbrushes for the inner design.  It can either be a wall hanging or worn as a skirt.  Much of the fabric made in West Africa for dresses etc. are batik.
