Selva Negra

44” x 56”

Acrylic

2004

This painting was inspired by the first painting I ever created, The Huntress.  While seemingly borrowing from the flatness and subject matter of Gauguin, I’ve incorporated a unique style of lighting as well as a certain maternity absent from Gauguin’s South Pacific work.  I’ve placed the subject on a diagonal to make the work slightly off-balanced, mimicking the oddness of having a mother with child next to a lioness.

My first painting ever, done in 1997, was inspired by a post card I had found.  Even from the beginning I have focused my gaze on the female, non-Western form.
