Cleansing

22” x 28”

Oil

2000

There is a certain intimacy with cleansing that strikes me as a good subject to portray.  I reduced the palette to green and blue to focus on lighting and the effects of soft colors.  The blue could also represent the cleansing agent.  For me, the eyes are the most powerful here.  She looks at the spectator boldly, half beckoning him to watch her in her intimate state, half reproaching him for entering her space.

While keeping with the green palette, this painting couldn’t be more different from Cleansing.  There is a menacing undertone highlighted by the cowering figure, recoiling from an unseen presence.  The faceless figure also casts an eerie feel.  The blank figure is juxtaposed by a background electrified with color.  For me it represents the feeling one gets when she is in a new and unknown place.
