Tri-City Art for Darfur Fundraiser Kicks off in Houston
Houston, TX, March 1st, 2007- As a way of raising awareness about the atrocities committed in Darfur as well as raising funds for the people who are suffering from these violent acts, Art for Darfur will be holding a fundraising event from 2-5pm on April 15th in Trammell Commons at St. John’s School (2401 Claremont Lane at Westheimer). Everyone is invited to attend. Local artists are contributing work that will be auctioned off while we present material and speak about the situation in Darfur. Proceeds from the auction and from the suggested donation at the door go to the Genocide Intervention Network (501(c)(3) tax-exempt status).
This event is part of a series of fundraisers that will also be held in the Bay Area and New York. Bridgeway Foundation has generously committed to a $5000 challenge grant and Bill Baumeyer, a representative of Bridgeway Foundation, has said, “We believe Art for Darfur is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about the genocide in Darfur.” If any other company would like to be a part of this worthy cause, please contact Maya Smith.
All artists are welcome to donate artwork. Various sizes, media, and subject matters are permitted although the central theme is genocide and the Sudan. Maya Smith will be displaying around 15 paintings that reflect the particular struggle of women in Darfur.
With a half a million people murdered and over 2.5 million displaced, Darfurians need the support of the global community to stand up against a government that is systematically killing and terrorizing its citizens. Genocide has happened in the past and is happening right now. When will the cycle end? We have a chance to show our fellow man that genocide has no place in our world.
